Justice Pilgrimage to Alabama

In 2018, I was sitting at my desk as Senior Development Director at GLIDE when Social Justice Director Rabbi Michael Lezak walked in and said, “We have to bring GLIDE to the opening of the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum: From Slavery to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.” We immediately got to work developing the plan to raise enough money, and organize all the logistics, to bring 45 GLIDE staff members, and 40 GLIDE donors, UCSF healthcare leaders and the SF Jewish community to participate in the powerful opening week of the Museum and Memorial- joining thousands of others from around the country.

It was a transformational experience for all of us who participated as we confronted the origins of racial injustice, and recommitted to our work as allies in the struggle for liberation. I’m thrilled that the Justice Pilgrimage to Alabama for GLIDE staff, community members and partners is now an annual event, and a cornerstone of the transformational work at GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice.
